The city of
Baia Mare, the seat of
the county of Maramures, is an important administrative, economic and cultural centre, where the medieval architecture merge perfectly with the modern buildings. This is a typical feature for the city situated in the north of Romania which ranks third in this part of the country ( after Cluj Napoca and Oradea ) due to the concentration and the importance of economic activities present in the city.
The local small woodwork and craftwork industry is famous all around the world. One of the most visited tourist attractions in the city of
Baia Mare is the Ethnographic Museum of Baia Mare, an open - air museum which contains different peasant households, real wooden jewels. The main piece of this museum is the wooden medieval church ( 17th century ) built by the local artisans.

Baia Mare are: "Saint Trinity" church, a baroque worship edifice; "Iancu de Hunedoara" House";
Saint Stephen's tower - elevated by Iancu de Hunedoara in Gothic style - the building had been used for many years for the strategic supervision of the town ( sort of barbican ). Other tourist points with great historical importance are : the Monetary Building, nowadays the premises of Maramures County Museum and the Butchers' Tower, considered to be the place where Pintea Viteazul ( a local hero ) was shot.

Baia Mare shelters a lot of other modern architectural buildings : "St Marry" Orthodox Cathedral, very artistically decorated, the Culture House, where the cultural and political events of the city of
Baia Mare are usually taking place, the Prefecture of Maramures County, the most representative modern construction that maintains the specificity of the traditional architecture of
Maramures, and the Dramatic Theatre, a stylish prominent building.
The architecture in
Baia Mare merges perfectly with the abundant vegetation and the explosion of colours all around the city. Their "favourite" location is
Expo Flora, an annual floral exhibition organized on the occasion of the
Chestnut Fair, one of the hallmarks of the county of
Maramures.
